The city of Minneapolis declares a snow emergency

After consulting with operations staff and public safety officials, the City of Minneapolis has declared a Snow emergency Beginning today, December 19thTh at 12 p.m. City workers have plowed and worked roads to keep them passable. Parking rules for snow emergencies go into effect on Tonight 9 p.m This allows crews to continue their work, plowing more than 1,000 miles of roads as wide as possible.

Rules for emergency parking in snowy conditions

Our goal is to create clear, passable roads through plowing and snow removal. To do this, we need the help of local residents to deal with the snow emergency Parking rules. These rules help plows clear streets so emergency vehicles and other traffic can move and park. When plowing, vehicles parked on the street must move. It’s in everyone’s best interest to do their part so that plows can do the best job possible and people can avoid tickets and towing.

Park rules apply for three days after a snow emergency is declared:

  • 9 p.m. Today, December 19thTh until 8 a.m FridayDDecember 20th (Day 1)
Do not park on BOTH side of one Snow emergency route to 8 a.m., or the road is completely plowed.
  • 8 a.m. to 8 p.m FridayDDecember 20th (Day 2)
Do not park on the STRAIGHT numbered side of a non-snow emergency route until 8:00 p.m., or when that side of the street is completely cleared, or on BOTH side of a parkway, until 8:00pm, or the parkway is completely cleared.
  • 8 a.m. to 8 p.m SaturdayDDecember 21st (Day 3)
Do not park on the odd-numbered side of a non-snow emergency route until 8:00 p.m. if that side of the road is not completely cleared.

Register now and stay informed all season long

Residents, workers and visitors have several options for finding out when a snow emergency is declared and what to do if it does. We recommend signing up for at least two types of notifications:

  • Call the snow emergency hotline – Our automated hotline can be reached at 612-348-SNOW (7669). If there is a snow emergency, the hotline will have information about that day’s parking restrictions that drivers must follow to avoid tickets and towing. The hotline offers information in English, Spanish, Somali and Hmong.

Remember to clear sidewalks and the area around your garbage trucks

Sidewalks are an important part of our city’s transportation system and should be accessible to everyone. For this reason, the Minneapolis ordinance requires property owners to clear sidewalks within 24 hours of a snowfall for houses and duplexes and within four hours a day for all other properties. Failure to shovel your sidewalk could result in you being charged a bill for the cost of shoveling. The city also provides free sand to residents at several locations. After clearing your walkways, spreading sand will help provide traction. It also helps melt stuck snow or ice more quickly. Find out more on the City website.
