The cold front is decreasing, the changing wind behind the front

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – The weak cold front will continue to produce increased shower activity across the western half of the state through today as it stalls and weakens near Oahu. A breezy north-northeast wind will blow behind the front this afternoon, then weaken and shift to the east-northeast statewide Friday afternoon/evening.

Currently, weather models agree that the majority of precipitation occurs in the western half of the state. The front continues to break apart before creating devastating weather for Maui County and Hawaii Island.

The moisture swirling with widespread showers over and around O‘ahu as it dissipates; What remains will rise to the northeast tonight. Gusty north to north-northeast winds following the front will be part of the weather for Kauai and Oahu today, eventually weakening throughout the day and producing light winds over the weekend and strong trade winds into next week.

For Honolulu Marathon runners and enthusiasts, here is your advance forecast for race day: Mostly sunny ENE 5-15 mph 5:00-10:00 a.m. local time, winds becoming up to 20 mph after 10:00 a.m local time stronger.

Due to a breach at the Hanalei Buoy late this afternoon, a High Surf Warning has been issued for the north and west facing Niihau and Kauai coasts through this evening. Northwesterly swells will continue to move through island waters over the next few days, keeping surf high on the exposed north and west coasts. A new impulse of medium-period north-northwest wave could arrive on Saturday, another impulse is possible on Monday; and a long lasting southerly swell is expected this weekend.
