MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – Thursday brought the coldest temperatures to southern Wisconsin since mid-January. This included the first sub-zero temperatures of the season and single-digit maximum temperatures. As in the last few weeks, it won’t stay that way. We continue with the ebb and flow of the weather pattern. Arctic air will remain in the area through Friday night. A low pressure area will move in on Saturday, and light freezing rain is expected in southern Wisconsin on Saturday morning. It will rain in the afternoon. Warmer temperatures and more chances of rain are expected early next week.

What’s next…

Dry weather will continue this evening as arctic high pressure prevails and temperatures are very cold around freezing. The wind will be light, but the wind chill will still be below zero. Tomorrow temperatures will rise into the upper teens to lower 20s as the wind shifts to the southeast bringing in warmer air from the lake. Saturday’s low pressure area is slowing. Precipitation may not begin until Saturday morning, possibly in the form of snow and sleet to freezing rain in southern Wisconsin, depending on timing. By the afternoon the temperatures will be warmer and it will rain. Light winter accumulations are possible, particularly in southwest Wisconsin.

Looking ahead…

Due to the departing low pressure system, some showers could continue into Sunday morning, particularly in eastern Wisconsin. Temperatures will remain above freezing, so rain is expected. A new low pressure system will bring rain Monday into Tuesday, with warmer temperatures around 40°C. There is a chance of heavier rain and a cold front on Tuesday. After Monday’s system, temperatures will return to normal, with highs in the 30s and lows in the 20s.
