Stand-up comedian Whitney Cummings poked fun at CNN’s low ratings during the network’s special live New Year’s Eve coverage.

Appearing on CNN’s long-running “New Year’s Eve Live with Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen” on Tuesday night, Cummings joked that the cable news network had few viewers.

“I now do shows for 3,000 viewers, which is about the same audience as CNN these days,” the comedian said during the broadcast.

Cummings’ swipe came just two hours before the ball dropped in New York’s Times Square on Tuesday evening. Softening the blow, she added: “But not this show. All eyes are on this show.”

The hosts, Bravo’s Andy Cohen and longtime CNN anchor Anderson Cooper, seemed to take Cummings’ jab in stride. “Nice, nice,” Cooper replied, laughing, while Cohen remarked, “You’re all on fire today.”

Cooper continued to play along, mentioning that he and Cohen did a tour together where the crowd was similar to Cummings’ tour. “We liked 3,000 people,” he said.

The comic’s humor was certainly right for the low-ratings network, which lost a large portion of its viewers after President-elect Donald Trump’s victory.

In the two weeks following Trump’s victory, CNN consistently posted double-digit percentage declines in key metrics, losing 33% of total viewers compared to its 2024 average, 39% in the demo and 36% of its already small primetime audience.

During the first week of December, CNN’s primetime programs “Anderson Cooper 360,” “The Source with Kaitlan Collins” and “CNN NewsNight with Abby Phillip” averaged just 367,000 total viewers from 8 to 11 p.m. In comparison, Fox News Channel averaged 2.5 million viewers in prime time during the same period.

These numbers show that CNN was the 17th cable channel in prime time this week. The Food Network’s primetime offering reached a larger audience during the same period.

Elsewhere during her CNN appearance, Cummings criticized the entertainment industry for lecturing Americans.

When asked about her new gig as host of the Friends-themed quiz show “Fast Friends” for the streaming service Max and whether she was a fan of the legendary 90s sitcom, she replied: “You know what? “Friends” fan. I’m also a fan of entertainment that just entertains. There’s this new thing where in Hollywood you have to teach people how to vote and make you feel bad about global warming.

“It’s just a fun show, not scary. It’s just warm and healthy,” the comedian added.
