The Dallas Cowboys will start Trey Lance in the final game of the NFL season against the Washington Commanders

Trey Lance will get his first start as quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday.

Lance will be the focus when the Cowboys play their season finale against the Washington Commanders. It will be his first NFL start since September 18, 2022, when he played for the San Francisco 49ers.

Lance has played in just three games this season, completing five of seven passes for 22 yards with one interception.

The 49ers moved up to the third overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, selecting Lance out of North Dakota State. He was expected to be their starter in 2022 before breaking his right ankle in the second game of the season.

The injury, which included ligament damage, required two surgeries – the second to remove hardware from the first that was causing irritation in the ankle.

The Cowboys acquired Lance from the 49ers on August 25, 2023 in exchange for a fourth-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.

The Cowboys have announced that Trey Lance will start the final game of the NFL season on Sunday

Lance, 24, has played in just 11 games in his NFL career, completing 61 of 109 passes for 819 yards with five touchdowns and four interceptions.

The Cowboys face an uncertain offseason as coach Mike McCarthy’s contract expires.

McCarthy, a Super Bowl winner with Green Bay, failed to get the Cowboys past the divisional round of the playoffs during his tenure in Dallas.

The same was true for the five coaches before him, starting with the last of the venerable franchise’s five Super Bowl titles to cap off the 1995 season.
