James Lee Williams, the popular British drag performer and singer who was known as The Vivienne, has died aged 32.

The news was announced by her publicist Simon Jones, who shared a statement on social media.

“It is with great sadness that we inform you that our beloved James Lee Williams – The Vivienne, passed away this weekend,” Jones said.

“James was an incredibly loved, warm and amazing human being. Her family is heartbroken over the loss of their son, brother and uncle.

“They are so proud of the wonderful things James has accomplished in their lives and careers.”

Welsh-born Vivienne rose to fame after competing in and ultimately winning the first season of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK in 2019, having already been named the UK Drag Ambassador for the US show four years earlier.

Jones’ statement concluded: “We ask that James’ family be given the time and privacy they need now to process their grief and grieve.”

Following the news, tributes immediately poured in from hundreds of The Vivienne’s friends and supporters.

Emmerdale actress Lisa Riley called The Vivienne an “incredible human being”.

“Never stop shining your beautiful light over us all,” she wrote. “Love and strength to your entire family. We will miss you so much.”
