The defensive assistant will not return to the Alabama football coaching staff for the second season

Alabama football will see at least one coaching change in 2025.

Co-defensive coordinator/defensive backs coach Colin Hitschler will not return for a second season on coach Kalen DeBoer’s staff, sources with knowledge of the situation told AL.com.

ESPN was first to report the expected change.

Hitschler worked primarily with safeties during his season in Tuscaloosa. He joined DeBoer’s staff after spending two seasons at Wisconsin, where he was also co-defensive coordinator/safeties coach.

Hitschler previously worked at Cincinnati from 2018 to 2021. He was at South Alabama from 2014 to 2017, which overlapped with Kane Wommack when he was defensive coordinator in Mobile. Hitschler also coached safeties during his senior year at South Alabama.

Hitschler is from Philadelphia. He was a wrestler at the University of Pennsylvania before starting his career in football. Further stages in his career included working as a research assistant at Arkansas State University.

Alabama just came off its first 10-win season since 2007, Nick Saban’s first year with the Crimson Tide. Alabama finished 2024 at 9-4, capped by a loss to Michigan in the ReliaQuest Bowl.
