The Detroit Pistons' five-game winning streak ends with a 107-104 loss to the Warriors

Despite a bad night from Steph Curry, the Detroit Pistons were unable to compete against the Golden State Warriors on Thursday.

They fell to the Warriors 107-104 at Little Caesars Arena, despite Curry making just 23.8% of his shots, including 2 of 14 from 3, en route to 17 points. The Pistons were 18 points behind with 5:40 minutes left in the previous game. A courageous 22:6 run brought the final minutes to an end.

A Malik Beasley dunk cut the score to 104-102 with 23 seconds left. Curry, who otherwise had a poor night, made two free throws with 14.6 seconds left in the game to tie the game at two possessions and secure the win. Cade Cunningham intentionally missed a second free throw with 4.1 seconds left and the Pistons trailing by 3, and a review confirmed the shot grazed the rim before Cunningham rebounded.

However, Malik Beasley’s supposedly tying 3-point attempt failed at the buzzer.

Beasley finished the game with 21 points on 8-for-21 shooting and Cunningham led the Pistons with 32 points while adding eight assists and six rebounds.

Ausar Thompson returned to the starting lineup after missing two games due to illness. Tim Hardaway Jr. missed the game with back strain and is on the injury report alongside Jaden Ivey (broken left fibula).

The first half was inconsistent for the Pistons, as they trailed by as many as 18 points in the second quarter before cutting their deficit to 10 points with a 7-0 run at halftime, 57-47.

Twelve turnovers in the first half led to 20 points for the Warriors, who also received big contributions from underused role players Lindy Waters III and Gui Santos, who combined to knock down six of seven attempts from three in the first half and went 7-for-1. 12 beyond the arc for the game.

Fortune turned in the Pistons’ favor when they reduced their turnovers. A 14-2 run in the third period cut the deficit to five, 72-67, in the third period. They had a turnover but finally found a rhythm from downtown, making five three-pointers in the period after going just 6 of 18 (33%) in the first half. They also lost a single ball in the final stages, which helped their run.

Shooting numbers in Holland are improving

The No. 5 overall pick in 2024 has been one of the Pistons’ most consistent contributors this season. He is the only player in the squad to have appeared in all 38 games this season. And he has measurably improved every week, as reflected in his shooting percentages.

His three made 3-pointers on Thursday night marked the highlight of his career and were also a personal milestone considering he came into the game making just 21.2% of his attempts. But in his 18 games through Thursday, Holland had made 37.5% of his attempts – nine of 23 – and shot 59.8% overall.

His energy and eagerness have earned him playing time. Now his efficiency is starting to match the other aspects of his game.
