The engagement pressure between Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift is increasing

At least that’s the prevailing narrative after Travis Kelce wished Hailee Steinfeld and Josh Allen congratulations following their engagement.

In a joint Instagram post shared on Friday, Allen is seen on his knees in front of a massive floral arch while Steinfeld leans down and presses her forehead to his. The two are surrounded by cylindrical candles, with the sea visible in the background. The couple did not specifically announce that they were engaged, only captioning the photo: “♾️ 11•22•24 ♾️.” USA TODAY has reached out to the couple’s representatives for comment.

Kelce’s “congratulations” comment – which included three exclamation points and four emojis – caused a stir among many Instagram users. The comment had nearly 14,000 likes and more than 200 replies as of Monday morning. Many speculate that he will be the next to get engaged to his girlfriend Taylor Swift. “You’re next,” one commenter wrote. “Your turn bro,” quipped another.

But pressuring someone to get engaged, married, or make a big romantic move isn’t a good idea, especially because marriage isn’t for everyone.

Research has shown that marriage is steadily declining in the United States, and a 2019 report found that three in 10 people think it is unimportant.

“For decades, people have been exploring less traditional forms of relationship style,” Antonia Hall, psychologist, relationship expert and author of “The Ultimate Guide to a Multi-Orgasmic Life,” previously told USA TODAY. “Social views on living together have become more positive and we are getting more and more used to different family paradigms. We are beginning to understand that there is no one-size-fits-all way of living together in relationships.”

Although the pressure to marry often comes from well-intentioned people, those who don’t conform still face a societal stigma. Every move Swift and Kelce make, especially without rings on their fingers, warrants closer scrutiny.

Because “in general, there is fear in our society when we cannot divide people into clearly defined categories.”

“So when they don’t fit into a neat box, we resort to judging them,” says Weena Wise, a licensed clinical marriage and family therapist.

Traditional marriage has long been heralded as an ideal life structure that offers companionship, security and the best way to raise a family. However, experts say this is not necessarily true.

In fact, many people have a romanticized image of what a marriage should look like. They assume marriage is effortless and easy without understanding the reality.

“Marriage can be viewed as a goal achieved that no longer requires effort, which couldn’t be further from the truth,” says Hall. As a result, “it is all too common in long-term relationships and marriages for couples to stop trying and take each other for granted.”
