The exact release date of Squid Game season 3 may have been leaked by Netflix

While Netflix has noted in several promotions for next year’s content that Squid Game season 3 will be released in 2025, they may have accidentally given away the exact date.

Netflix Korea briefly let a video go live that not only included the 2025 release date, but a specific date, June 27, 2025. That would be in just six months, essentially a record time for releasing a new season of a huge show, especially when it took three years to get from Season 1 to Season 2.

However, if you’ve seen Season 2 and heard anything creator Hwang Dong-hyuk said about it, you know that it’s more or less part 2 of Season 2 and not Season 3 in the more traditional sense. This is what happened:

“There’s no particular reason other than that I originally envisioned it as a single series, so both seasons two and three as a single series when I wrote it. But then as I continued writing the story, it became too many episodes and too long a story because you see Gi-hun’s journey where he returns to the game but also goes through a revolt, and that’s actually the climax of this story , in which he tries to start a riot, but then everything fails.”

“And I also saw that aspect as another game, and so I thought that we would split it into two seasons to achieve that – Gi-hun’s revolt failed, he ended up losing his best friend, that himself is another important climatic event in the first half of the season, i.e. in the second season.”

Production of both seasons took place simultaneously. Part of this three-year hiatus involved Hwang filming a massive 14-episode story arc that was split into two seasons. While Netflix’s release schedule of “splitting a new season of a popular series in half” has been common lately, it’s usually 4 and 4 or 5 and 5 and about a month apart. Here, six months apart, with seven hour long episodes each? Sure, I guess I’ll give them the “Season 3” badge in this case.

Why so soon? Well, I think Netflix knows that people clearly want the second season’s cliffhangers to be resolved sooner rather than later, but also the way they’re distributing the content means they probably want the second one Half of 2025 will be dedicated to the other two big shows. the final season of Stranger Things, season 5 and season 2 of Wednesday, the two most-watched English series of all time, with Squid Game being the most-watched overall. Because of the way this is all shaping up, it’s going to be a really big year for Netflix.

Update (1/3): To add even more credence to this idea that Squid Game Season 3 will be released on June 27th, we can look at the potential estimated release dates of Stranger Things Season 5 and Wednesday Season 2, which I previously calculated based on previous filming Data extrapolated forward.

  • For example, filming for the fifth season of “Stranger Things” wrapped in December 2024. Given the current schedule for Season 4, that’s likely to be eight months of post-production, which would see it released in August 2025, although with a larger season perhaps closer to October 2025. a fair bit away from Squid Game Season 3.
  • There are two main options for Wednesday Season 2. By the same calculation and after filming is completed, the release window is probably somewhere in July 2025, right after the third season of Squid Game airs. However, if Netflix wanted to expand the series further and release it closer to the release of the first season, i.e. November 23, 2022, that might be the more likely plan, even if it would completely extend the gap between seasons to three years. The fans have waited so long, so what more is there?

My final guess is Squid Game in June, Stranger Things in September/October, and Wednesday in November/December 2025. We’ll see if I’m right, but I think I’ll probably end up pretty close. Regardless, it’s going to be a truly massive year for Netflix.
