The Fall Guy is Prime Video's #1 new movie - don't miss this underrated action comedy

The Fall Guy has landed on Prime Video and I think David Leitch’s 2024 action comedy could finally get the second chance it so clearly deserves.

Although “The Fall Guy” seemingly has all the ingredients for a summer blockbuster success – a goofy, fun sensibility, plenty of well-directed action and starring A-list stars – it ended up being a box office disappointment, and that is a real disappointment crying shame.

However, with its release on Prime Video, it looks like the film will be made available to a large number of would-be fans. The Fall Guy released on Prime Video on January 2nd and has already secured the number one spot on the streaming service in the US at the time of writing

If you’ve watched The Fall Guy climb the Prime Video charts and are excited to see what’s in store, here’s a little more information about the film and my plea to give it a try.

In “The Fall Guy,” career stuntman Colt Seavers (Ryan Gosling) is dragged into the spotlight for a fast-paced, real-life adventure.

After taking time off after sustaining an injury during a stunt gone wrong, Colt returns to work on Metalstorm, a big-budget blockbuster directed by his ex Jody Moreno (Emily Blunt). When the lead actor goes missing, Colt tries to track him down to prevent “Metalstorm” from being canceled… and soon becomes embroiled in a dangerous conspiracy revolving around the missing star. Can Colt find the clue and solve the crisis? And win back the love of his life? To find out, you’ll have to stream it.

In addition to Gosling and Blunt, “The Fall Guy” also stars Aaron Taylor Johnson, Hannah Waddingham, Teresa Palmer, Stephanie Hsu and Winston Duke.

Should you stream The Fall Guy?

I still don’t fully understand why The Fall Guy was a box office flop for Universal last year. David Leitch’s film is bold, silly fun, and if you were one of the many viewers who skipped it last year, now is the perfect opportunity to see it.

To me, it feels like a solid follow-up to the “Barbie” film – which recently landed on Netflix – precisely because it makes the most of Gosling’s on-screen charisma, action and comedy qualities. Not only is Colt Seavers a Ken impersonation, but the stuntman’s affable everyman energy is just as entertaining and endearing as Gosling’s previous on-screen appearance. Oh, and Blunt and Gosling make a winning pair of lovers that you’ll definitely root for if you give them a chance.

And with stuntman director Leitch’s camera, you can expect The Fall Guy to have plenty of really exciting set pieces. The script may not be the smartest, and you’ll probably see how the big ending is a long way off, but you have to meet The Fall Guy on his terms; that is not the case meant be an intellectual film. What “The Fall Guy” Is is quite simple: it’s a fun, fast-paced comic adventure, a true ode to stunt work and pure popcorn entertainment.

You don’t have to take my word for it either; At the time of writing, The Fall Guy has an 82% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, indicating generally positive reactions.

Case in point: The Guardian’s Adrian Horton gave “The Fall Guy” a four-star review, calling it “a consistently good time, two hours of flourishes with impeccable timing, two real movie stars with palpable chemistry, several enjoyable meta shows.” “ Oops of business and of course lots of crazy stunts.

In a review for The Hollywood Reporter, Lovia Gyarkye praised “The Fall Guy” as “the rare major studio film that feels human.” Although they criticized the overarching narrative and the way the plot is put together, they still called The Fall Guy “a true delight.”
