The FBI arrests Boston City Councilwoman Tania Fernandes Anderson on public corruption charges

FBI special agents in Boston arrested City Councilwoman Tania Fernandes Anderson on public corruption charges Friday morning.

According to WCVB, Fernandes Anderson was under federal investigation and FBI agents were seen outside her Dorchester home this morning taking her into custody.

She faces five counts of wire fraud and one count of theft related to programs receiving federal funds, according to a court filing from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Massachusetts.

Federal prosecutors allege that Fernandes Anderson hired an employee related to her in late 2022 and then defrauded the city by proposing an agreement under which the person would receive “additional compensation but would receive the majority of that bonus payment back.”

“From approximately early to mid-2023, Fernandes Anderson experienced personal financial difficulties, which included, among other things, missing monthly rent and car payments, a threatened $5,000 civil penalty from the Ethics Commission, and incurring bank overdraft fees that resulted in: that Fernandes Anderson continued to maintain low daily bank balances,” says the filing, obtained by the Boston Globe.

“On or about June 9, 2023, at approximately 4:11 p.m., Employee A sent Fernandes Anderson a text message entitled “Bathroom” to let Fernandes Anderson know that Employee A was waiting in the bathroom to send Fernandes Anderson the 7,000 “U.S. dollars in cash.” The court document continued. “Within seconds, Fernandes Anderson texted Employee A “Ready” to confirm that Fernandes Anderson was ready to accept Employee A’s $7,000 cashback.

“Shortly after these texts, Employee A handed Fernandes Anderson approximately $7,000 in cash in a restroom at City Hall.”

The filing also states that Boston city councilors were not permitted to hire immediate family members as part of their paid staff, yet Fernandes Anderson hired two such individuals in 2022.

Prosecutors say Fernandes Anderson later fired those two employees and was notified by the Ethics Commission of a $5,000 fine related to that incident.

Then last month, the Massachusetts Office of Campaign and Political Finance told her campaign that donations had exceeded the legal limit and had failed to submit deposit information on time, WCVB reported.

“Your conduct, as alleged in today’s indictment, is a slap in the face to the hardworking taxpayers of the City of Boston, who have a right to expect that the City’s funds are in good and honest hands,” said the special agent in charge Jodi Cohen in a statement. “This case shows how the FBI and our partners work hard every day to combat public corruption and the destructive damage it inflicts on people’s trust in government.”

Anderson represents District 7, which includes the Boston neighborhoods of Roxbury, Dorchester, Fenway and part of the South End.

“Councilwoman Anderson was elected to the Boston City Council on November 2, 2021, becoming the first African immigrant and Muslim American elected to the Boston City Council,” reads a biography of her on the City of Boston website.

“Prior to serving as a city councilwoman, Tania was executive director of Bowdoin Geneva Main Streets, a parent advocate with Boston Public Schools, a program manager for a women’s homeless shelter, a business owner and a children’s social worker. She was also a caregiver mother of 17 children while raising two biological children,” the bio continues.
