The FDA is recalling more than 12,000 cases of high-quality chicken broth sold at Walmart

If you’ve recently purchased chicken broth at your local Walmart, it’s time to check your supply.

In December, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a recall notice for more than 2,000 cases of chicken broth sold in Walmart stores across the United States under the name Great Value Chicken Broth. As the FDA explained, the recall notice was issued after it was determined that the packaging had a problem that could lead to product spoilage.

The recall affects 2,023 of the 48-ounce family-sized cartons manufactured by Tree House Foods and sold at 242 Walmart locations in nine states, including Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas. The boxes have a lot code of 98F09234, a retail unit UPC of 007874206684, and a packaging UPC of 078742066844. They also have a best before date of March 25, 2026.

“The health and safety of our customers is always our top priority,” a Walmart spokesperson said in a statement to various publications. “As soon as we were made aware of the issue, we took action to remove all affected (products) from…select affected stores. We continue to work with the supplier to investigate.”

Anyone who purchased the chicken broth is asked to discard it immediately or return it to the point of purchase for a full refund.

Although there have been no reports of illness associated with this recall, it is still important to discard the product. As The healthy one Reportedly, with bacterial spoilage, “you’re unlikely to notice a change in the taste, smell, or appearance of your food,” making it difficult to tell if something has gone bad. However, if a product is contaminated with harmful bacteria, it can cause food poisoning and therefore gastrointestinal problems.

This isn’t the only recent Walmart recall. As Food & Wine previously reported, the FDA also issued a recall notice on December 31 for Braga Fresh’s washed and ready-to-eat 12-ounce Marketside Broccoli Florets due to the “possibility of Listeria monocytogenes contamination.” This product was sold at Walmart locations in 20 states. So check your freezer for this too.
