The aircraft was a 15-year-old Boeing 737-800 passenger aircraft. It was arriving from Bangkok when the crash occurred at 9:03 a.m. local time near the city of Muan, which is about 180 miles south of Seoul.

“I think that was basically the disaster for this plane,” he said.

Flight data and cockpit voice recorders from the plane’s black box were recovered by workers. They are being examined by government experts who are investigating the cause of the crash and fire, said Joo Jong-wan, a senior Transportation Ministry official.

While it will likely take months to determine the cause of the crash, Lee Jeong-hyeon, head of Muan Fire Station, said workers were looking into various possibilities, including whether the plane was hit by birds.

President Biden issued a statement on Sunday about the crash and offered U.S. assistance if needed.

“Jill and I are deeply saddened to learn of the deaths that occurred as a result of the Jeju Airlines accident in Muan, Republic of Korea,” Biden said. “As close allies, the American people share a deep friendship with the people of South Korea, and our thoughts and prayers are with those affected by this tragedy. The United States stands ready to provide any assistance necessary.”

Transportation Department officials said the airport’s control tower issued a bird strike warning to the plane shortly before it was scheduled to land and gave its pilot permission to land in a different area.

The plane was destroyed, with the tail unit the only visible part among the rubble, the fire chief said at a televised news conference.
