The first Superman trailer shows David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan in action

It’s not a bird or a plane – it’s this Superman Trailer.

The first teaser for the director James GunnThe new version of the popular comic character was released on Thursday, December 19th. Twister star David Corenswet takes on the mantle as Superman (aka Clark Kent). The wonderful Mrs. Maisel alum Rachel Brosnahan portrays his colleague-turned-true-love, Lois Lane.

At the beginning, he shows a shot of an injured Superman falling into the Arctic, whistling to call his super dog Krypto to “take me home.” The adorable pup follows his instructions by biting his cape to pull him to safety.

The trailer is packed with first looks at the star-studded cast, including Nicholas HoultIt’s Lex Luthor, who is seen scheming in his LuthorCorp tower with a weapon in his hand. Heroes like Nathan Fillion‘s green lantern, Isabela Merced‘s Hawkgirl and Edi GathegiMister Terrific appears alongside Superman in a Stagg Industries building.

Anthony Carrigan doesn’t look like Metamorpho again, while Superman is shown in what looks like the Fortress of Solitude, cradling a robot.

The trailer doesn’t offer many clues about the film’s plot, but it does offer glimpses of several breathtaking action sequences. However, a shot of a bystander throwing a can at Superman’s head suggests that the inhabitants of this universe are not so accepting of the Man of Steel.

The preview ends with a sweet shot of Superman and Lois kissing while floating before the titular hero shoots into the sky.

Before filming wrapped, Brosnahan, 34, spoke exclusively to her about Lois Lane’s legacy Us weekly.

“I have big shoes to fill,” Brosnahan admitted Us in July. “But this Superman is made with a lot of love and everyone is excited by the responsibility of carrying on this iconic tradition and being part of this canon. And so I look at those who came before me, I’m in awe of them and I’m excited to be able to pick up the torch.”

She follows Amy Adamswho most recently appeared as an intrepid reporter Zack Snyder’s Justice League (2021).

“It was an incredible experience,” Brosnahan continued. “I met extraordinary artists. It was exciting to see James Gunn at the helm of this project. He sets the tone. He comes to work every day and is thrilled to be there, and that comes from the top. David Corenswet and Nick (Hoult) and the rest of the cast and I learn from him and we have a lot of fun.”

Joining the Emmy winner in the role is Corenswet, 31 Henry Cavill. Cavill, 41, announced that he would no longer play Superman in December 2022 after nearly ten years in the role. Gunn, 58, assured the audience that the actor was perfect for the role.

“Honestly, from the bottom of my heart, David Corenswet will freak anyone out with his awesomeness,” Gunn said The Hollywood Reporter in November. “He’s one of the best actors I’ve ever worked with and he can do anything. The man is incredible.”

Gunn, who also runs DC Studios Peter Safranhas stated that he wanted to start fresh and tell a Superman story that was different from any story that had previously appeared on the big screen.

“I don’t think we’ve ever seen the big science fiction and Silver Age Superman aspects that we have in our film,” Gunn said on the Happy Sad Confused podcast earlier this month. “And we’ve never seen this particular part of Superman’s life before.”

He added that this version of Superman’s nemesis was scarier. “I don’t think we’ve ever seen the Lex that Nick is. Nick is impressive. You’re like, ‘Oh damn, poor Superman,'” Gunn teased. “That’s what we never see – not in the movies, sometimes in the comics. … You see now that Lex is not the person you want against you.”

Superman will be in theaters on July 11, 2025.
