RuPaul’s Drag Race UK winner James Lee Williams, better known by his stage name The Vivienne, has died. They were 32.

Williams’ death was confirmed by her manager Simon Jones, who released a statement on Instagram saying his client had died over the weekend.

“It is with great sadness that we inform you that our beloved James Lee Williams, The Vivienne, passed away this weekend,” the statement read. “James was an incredibly loved, warm and amazing human being. Her family is heartbroken over the loss of their son, brother and uncle. They are so proud of the wonderful things James has accomplished in their lives and careers. We will not release any further details. We ask that James’ family be given the time and privacy they need now to process their grief and grieve.”

In a more personal follow-up statement Jones shared shortly afterwards, he wrote: “These are words I never wanted to write.” Viv was a close friend, a customer and someone I loved very much. From the moment I met her in 2019, I knew we could create magic together and I became her manager. Their talent was immense and the light they brought to every room was amazing. No one has ever made me laugh as hard as Viv in my life. Her comic genius and quick wit were unique.”

Williams was the inaugural winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK in 2019 and subsequently appeared on the seventh season of RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars.

“Drag Race” host and judge Michelle Visage released a statement on her social media saying she was heartbroken. Visage wrote, “I don’t know how to express my feelings.”

Visage continued: “We go back to when I first started coming here to the UK. You were always there, always laughed, always gave, always got to the point. Your laughter, your wit, your talent, your impact. I loved everything, but I liked your friendship the most. You were a lighthouse for so many. It was amazing for me to see you make your West End debut, to see your dream come true right before my eyes. I’m lucky to have known you and laughed with you so many times.”

Jinkx Monsoon, who later won the seventh season of “Drag Race All Stars,” wrote, “I’m at a loss for words… She’s made a name for herself in our hearts and on their stages. It’s too early for the curtain call, but I know it’s a standing ovation.”

Williams was born in Colwyn Bay, Wales in 1992 and was also a musician and stage actor. They released their debut EP entitled “Bitch” in 2022 and played the Wicked Witch of the West in a stage adaptation of “The Wizard of Oz” in London’s West End in 2023.
