The Flyers can’t keep up with the Los Angeles Kings’ scoring pace after their 7-3 loss

In the third period on Thursday, the Los Angeles Kings scored four goals – twice as many Shots The Flyers hit the net.

The fatigue from back-to-back nights was evident as the Flyers wasted Tyson Foerster’s first multi-goal game of the season, losing 7-3 at home to the Kings.

Before problems arose in the third period, the Flyers stayed close through the first 40 minutes as the momentum between the two teams quickly shifted.

The Kings struck first. With his typical topline partner Cam York having a healthy lead, Travis Sanheim was paired with Jamie Drysdale and they got off to a rocky start. In the first period, the Kings’ Kevin Fiala sneaked behind both Sanheim and Drysdale and a stretch pass from Phillip Danault set him on the run. Fiala pushed the puck past goaltender Aleksei Kolosov to give the Kings a 1-0 lead.

It didn’t take long for the Flyers to respond. Bobby Brink won a race for the puck in the corner and fed Noah Cates alone in the slot, who backhanded the puck over Kings goaltender Darcy Kuemper to equalize. It was Cates’ fourth goal of the season and his second in as many games.

The Kings regained the lead in the second period when winger Tanner Jeannot pounced on a loose puck in a net-front challenge and pushed it past Kolosov.

The Flyers had several chances early in the second frame, but Kuemper thwarted a breakaway by Brink and later managed to stop a puck that deflected off Sean Couturier and bounced along the goal line. Foerster finally broke through and scored two goals in a four-minute span, giving the Flyers their first lead of the game at 3-2.

Both of Foerster’s goals came from down low, benefiting from passes from Scott Laughton and Morgan Frost.

Kolosov made some solid stops, but made a costly misstep with less than a minute left in the second period that wiped out the Flyers’ slim lead. The 22-year-old goaltender couldn’t quite smother a loose puck, and LA captain Anze Kopitar seized the opportunity to restore parity.

The Kings maintained the momentum early in the third period, scoring four unanswered goals while the Flyers looked listless. Warren Foegele deflected a point shot past Kolosov after 1 minute and 54 seconds for a 4-3 lead.

Brink drew a tripping call to give the Flyers a chance to equalize the man advantage again, but they failed to run out the clock in the offensive zone and didn’t even register a shot attempt.

The Kings then turned the knife. Los Angeles’ Alex Turcotte passed Emil Andrae, who returned to the lineup Thursday after three straight healthy scratches, to set up Kopitar’s second goal of the night. Goals from Quinton Byfield and Fiala put the game out of reach.
