The Game Awards 2024: The biggest announcements, trailers and reveals

The Game Awards 2024 saw an avalanche of new game announcements, ranging from the return of classic franchises (Okami, Turok, Virtua Fighter) to the unveiling of entirely new worlds (Naughty Dog’s). Naughty Dog’s new game Intergalactic: The Heretic Project revealed

Naughty Dog, developer of The Last of Us and Uncharted, returns with an all-new property: Intergalactic: The Heretic Project. According to the game’s official description, it is set thousands of years in the future. Intergalactic puts players in the role of Jordan A. Mun, “a bounty hunter stranded on Sempiria – a distant planet whose communication with the outer universe was severed hundreds of years ago.” Jordan must use all of her skills and wits when she hopes to be the first human to leave orbit in over 600 years.” Naughty Dog’s new game, directed by Neil Druckmann, has been in development since 2020.

Elden Ring Nightreign announced a new co-op multiplayer spinoff

FromSoftware returns to Elden Ring with a new cooperative multiplayer spin-off that isn’t the case Elden Ring 2but something different. Elden Ring Nightreign will be released in 2025 for PlayStation, PC and Xbox platforms.

The Witcher 4 starring Ciri has been revealed

CD Projekt Red revealed the next game in the Witcher series, marking the beginning of a new saga for the studio. The Witcher 4 will launch Ciri as the protagonist and… well, just check out the extremely impressive six-minute debut trailer for CD Projekt’s next big title.

The next game from Ico and Shadow of the Colossus director Fumito Ueda has been announced

The long-awaited next game from game director Fumito Ueda – the creator behind it Ico, Shadow of the ColossusAnd The Last Guardian – was revealed. The game currently has no title, but runs under that name Project: Robot. Ueda and his studio Gen Design have unveiled a game about a giant mech and a tiny pilot and what looks like a catastrophe that will end the world.

Borderlands 4 gets its official first look

Gearbox Software’s long-awaited new Borderlands game received its first real trailer at the Game Awards. Borderlands 4 promises to be “the most ambitious Borderlands game yet” when it launches in 2025. According to the game’s official description, players will fight the Timekeeper, “a ruthless dictator who rules the masses from above.” Now a world-changing cataclysm threatens his perfect order and unleashes chaos on the planet. Ignite a resistance and blast your way through mechanical monstrosities, bloodthirsty bandits and vicious beasts. Gather an arsenal of deadly firepower to wreak havoc as you make your way through Cairos.”

Okami is back and so is Hideki Kamiya

Capcom is finally making a sequel Okamithe 2006 action-adventure game inspired by The Legend of Zelda and Japanese folklore. In an even bigger surprise, Okami Game director Hideki Kamiya – formerly of PlatinumGames – is working on it in a new studio called Clovers, a sort of sequel to the closed Clover Studio.

Pac-Man goes dark in the shadow maze

If you caught Pac-Man Secret level Episode on Prime Video, be prepared for Bandai Namco’s new, darker take on the dot-eating ghost. A 2D action platformer, Shadow maze is definitely a departure for the character, who celebrates his 45th birthday in 2025.

Outer Wilds 2’s first gameplay reveal

Obsidian Entertainment offered a bold new look at the sequel to The Outer Worldsand promises “an action-packed adventure in a new colony with an even newer crew and the latest graphics.” The Outer Worlds 2 will be published in 2025.

Virtua Fighter 6 confirmed

The time has finally come: Sega is releasing a new entry in its fighting game series Virtua Fighter. The new Virtua Fighter comes with some familiar faces, but we’ll have to wait for developer Ryu Ga Gotoku Studios’ VF Direct 2024 to find out more details. The extremely prolific RGG Studio has also teased another game: Project Centurywhat looks like a violent twist on the Like A Dragon series from around the turn of the century.

Capcom announces a new Onimusha game

Capcom’s Onimusha samurai action series will return with Onimusha: Way of the Sword in 2026. This means 20 years have passed since the last new mainline entry in the franchise. Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams. The new Onimusha will be set in Kyoto in the early Edo period, where the city has been “transformed by nefarious wickedness and monstrous enemies known as Genma plague the surrounding area.”

Shadow the Hedgehog – and presumably Sonic the Hedgehog too – are getting behind the wheel for a new racing game called Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds. That’s literally all we know right now.

Mafia: The Old Country gets a new narrative trailer

2K and Hangar 13 offered an in-depth look at their new mob story set in the brutal underworld of 20th-century Sicily in a new narrative trailer Mafia: The Old Country. The new entry in the Mafia franchise will appear in summer 2025.

Saber Interactive revealed Turok: Originsa brand new entry in the dinosaur fighting action shooter series. Fighting as Turok warriors in co-op or single-player combat, players harvest the DNA of their enemies to empower themselves and “uncover secrets that hold the key to saving humanity.” Turok: Origins is coming to PS5, Windows PC and Xbox Series X.

The Illuminati is coming to Helldivers 2

The ancient Illuminate civilization returns in a new update for Helldivers 2. In the new Omens of Tyranny update, Helldivers on PlayStation 5 and Windows PC will protect new colonies, face new enemies, ride FRVs and engage in urban warfare.

Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound from Blasphemous developers

Koei Tecmo’s Ninja Gaiden franchise returns, but this time as a retro side-scroller, thanks Blasphemous Developers The Game Kitchen and DotEmu. Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound Ryu sees Hayabusa in America, and while he is away, the village of Hayabusa is plagued by demons. Young ninja Kenji Mozu sets out to save his and Ryu’s home in the new Ninja Gaiden game, coming summer 2025.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is coming to PC

The second chapter from Square Enix Final Fantasy 7 The remake project will be released for Windows PCs on January 23, 2025.

The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered is also coming to PC

Naughty dogs The Last of Us Part 2 is coming to Windows PC on April 3, 2025 with graphical improvements, game modes like the rogue-like survival experience No Return and Guitar Free Play, full DualSense controller integration and more, Sony Interactive Entertainment revealed at The Game Awards.

Racing game experts Milestone are reviving Screamer

MotoGP developer Milestone is bringing back the Screamer racing game series, which it developed in the early 1990s when the studio was still known as Grafitti. The new Screamer will have an anime touch thanks to animation studio Polygon Pictures and the voice of Troy Baker.

“The First Berzerker: Khazan” gets a release date

Nexon and developer Neople have released a new cinematic trailer for The First Berserker: Khazan which was “supervised by the award-winning Russo Brothers” and announced a March 27, 2025 release date for the action role-playing game on PS5, Windows PC and Xbox Series X.
