The Giants player admits he didn’t value Eagles’ Saquon Barkley enough

As the Giants prepare to end another disappointing season, they’re reflecting on moves made in the offseason that may have impacted the team’s locker room culture.

In a story by ESPN’s Jordan Ranaan, several players admitted that it hurt the Giants that running back Saquon Barkley signed with the Eagles.

“I think they got it, but maybe they just didn’t appreciate it enough because two of them left – (Barkley and wide receiver Sterling Shepard),” second-year quarterback Tommy DeVito said, via ESPN. “Two guys that were some of the most vocal leaders on offense, guys that played a ton.

“Those two guys meant a ton to me, but obviously Saquon is my guy. He kind of helped me get into this whole role and learn how everything went. He was, so to speak, my rock throughout this whole time. Seeing him go and seeing how it went was hard. Of course it’s also a business.”

After failing to reach an agreement on a contract extension with the Giants last season, Barkley signed a three-year, $37.75 million deal with the Eagles. So far, the deal is paying off for Philadelphia as the 27-year-old running back vie for his first MVP award.

DeVito wasn’t the only Giants player to lament the loss of Barkley. Tight end Daniel Bellinger also spoke about Barkley’s impact on the team on and off the field.

“For me, the biggest part of losing Saquon was the locker room aspect,” Bellinger said, via ESPN. “Just having him as a leader and a guy who in times like ‘What are we going to do’ is just ‘Go play!’ said.

“He brought an energy that we needed out there sometimes.”

Luckily for the Giants, they don’t have to worry about Barkley breaking the all-time rushing record in Sunday’s game against the Eagles. On Wednesday, Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni announced that he intends to rest “a few guys,” including Barkley in Philadelphia’s Week 18 game against New York.
