The Gilgo Beach serial murder suspect is charged with another murder

Officials in New York filed charges Tuesday against the man accused of a series of murders known as the Gilgo Beach serial killings.

Rex Heuermann was charged with second-degree murder in the death of Valerie Mack sometime between Sept. 1 and Nov. 19, 2000, according to an indictment provided to USA TODAY by the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office.

Mack’s remains were first discovered in 2000 and were not identified until 2020. Mack, 24, worked as a sex worker, and officials said several other victims were also sex workers. Partial remains were first found in November 2000 in Manorville, New York, about 50 miles from where more of her remains were found 11 years later along Ocean Parkway near Gilgo Beach, officials said in court papers.

Heuermann, 61, was previously charged with the murders of six other women, whose deaths spanned from the 1990s to 2011. Many of her remains were discovered on Gilgo Beach in 2010 and 2011, raising fears of a serial killer.

In July 2023, Heuermann was arrested and charged with the death of Megan Waterman, 22; Maureen Brainard-Barnes, 25; Melissa Barthelemy, 24; and Amber Costello, 27. In June of this year, Heuermann was also charged with the murder of Jessica Taylor, 20, whose dismembered remains were found days after her disappearance in 2003, and Sandra Costilla, 28, whose body was found in 1993. He pleaded not guilty to these murders.
