At the start of the season, the San Francisco 49ers’ Week 16 game against the Miami Dolphins appeared to be one of the more exciting games on the schedule. A possible preview of the Super Bowl? A battle between two of the best offenses in football? Kyle Shanahan vs. Mike McDaniel?

But after disappointing seasons on both sides, Sunday’s contest settled into the Week 16 standings as two disappointing teams looked to maintain their already extremely slim chances of a late playoff berth.

With San Francisco eliminated from postseason contention before kickoff, Brock Purdy and the 49ers struggled to separate themselves from the Dolphins, losing another game in ugly fashion, 29-17. The 49ers have now lost their second game in a row and suffered their fifth loss in their last six games.

Ahead of the final two games of the season, here’s a look at everything good and bad from the 49ers’ 29-17 loss to the Dolphins in Week 16.

Bad: playoff elimination

With a win for the Washington Commanders over the Philadelphia Eagles and a win for the Los Angeles Rams over the New York Jets, the 49ers’ already slim chance of a late postseason miracle run officially ended. Regardless of the result in Miami, the reigning NFC champions will miss the postseason for the first time in three years.

Good: Deebo Samuel

After a rough few weeks, Deebo Samuel came to life on Sunday in Miami. Samuel set the tone early by breaking tackles and dragging Dolphin defenders for an impressive 16-yard touchdown. Samuel was heavily involved in Kyle Shanahan’s game plan, touching the ball 12 times on Sunday, including five rushes and seven receptions.

Samuel finished the game with seven catches for 96 yards and a touchdown, along with 25 yards rushing. Samuel’s 96 yards receiving was his most since Week 6 against the Seattle Seahawks. Week 6 was also the last time Samuel scored a touchdown.

Brock Purdy

Despite amassing over 300 yards passing, Brock Purdy didn’t have his best performance against the Dolphins. With an undermanned offensive line in front of him, the Dolphins’ pass rush disrupted the 49ers’ passer.

Purdy finished the game with 313 yards passing, two touchdowns and one interception. His only pick came at the worst possible time for the 49ers.

After holding off the Dolphins with a field goal, the 49ers had a chance to take the lead late with a touchdown drive. However, Calais Campbell broke the line and was able to hit Purdy just before his free throw, forcing an arrogant throw that ended up in the hands of Miami’s Kader Kohou.

While Miami is known for its fast and powerful offense, most of its attacks on Sunday came from behind the line of scrimmage or with short passes. The Dolphins ran a series of screen passes to running back De’Von Achane and tight end Jonnu Smith.

While the Dolphins kept the situation under control, Nick Sorenson and the 49ers defense had no answer to Miami’s rushing passing attack.

Tua Tagovailoa finished the game with 215 passing yards and a 6.3 average against the 49ers. Tagovailoa didn’t have a dynamic downfield game through the air, with his biggest gain going to Tyreek Hill for 24 yards. The Dolphins rarely attempted a pass downfield, opting instead for Smith and Achane underneath. Achane was the Dolphins’ leading receiver with 70 yards through the air.
