The head of the Postal Service says aging trucks need to be modernized as Trump eyes electric vehicle plans

(Bloomberg) — Postmaster General Louis DeJoy said the U.S. Postal Service needs to replace its aging mail trucks and that he was unaware of the new presidential administration’s efforts to cancel plans to buy electric vehicles.

“We need vehicles,” DeJoy said in an interview at Bloomberg’s New York headquarters on Friday. “I have 100,000 vehicles that I’m buying. When I’m done with this, I’ll have another 100,000 that are long past their useful life.”

The comments came after Reuters reported that President-elect Donald Trump’s transition team is considering canceling contracts to electrify the postal delivery fleet. The possible move, part of a broader effort to roll back President Joe Biden’s electric car policy, could be announced shortly after the new administration takes office on Jan. 20, the report said, citing unidentified sources are familiar with the plans.

The transition team is exploring options to terminate multi-billion dollar contracts, including with Oshkosh Corp. and Ford Motor Co. to provide battery-powered vehicles for the Postal Service, Reuters said.

DeJoy said he had received no communication from the Trump team about this possibility and declined further comment.
