The House of Representatives passes a bill to prevent a shutdown hours before the deadline

The House voted Friday to pass an emergency funding bill to avert a shutdown just hours before the midnight deadline.

The Senate must next take up the bill before it can be sent to President Joe Biden for his signature.

The bill extends federal funding through March and provides disaster relief and farm aid, but does not include a suspension of the debt limit that President-elect Donald Trump had demanded from Republicans.

The successful House vote followed a tumultuous 24 hours on Capitol Hill as Republicans struggled to find a way to avoid a shutdown after Trump upended the funding push by opposing an initial bipartisan deal had.

Trump’s opposition to the bipartisan deal led Republicans to reject the agreement, angering Democrats. The Republican-led House then tried Thursday to pass a Trump-backed GOP funding plan that would have included a two-year suspension of the debt ceiling.

That bill failed amid opposition from Democrats and a significant number of Republicans, highlighting the limits of Trump’s influence over Republicans in Congress despite his position as party leader.

Democrats backed the stopgap bill, which was voted on Friday after Republicans abandoned debt limit provisions sought by Trump.

The House vote was 366 to 34. One Democrat voted present and all votes against the bill came from Republicans.

The bill will fund the government through March 14, 2025 and includes about $100 billion in disaster relief and an extension of the farm bill.
