“The icing on the cake:” Vanderbilt and Georgia Tech meet for the 18th Birmingham Bowl

After exciting regular seasons for the Vanderbilt Commodores and Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, the teams met for the 18th Birmingham Bowl. Some fans viewed the bowl game as a great end to a season that featured underdog victories for both teams.

In the third quarter, Vanderbilt led Georgia Tech 14-13.

The Commodores pulled off a major upset with a 6-6 loss to the Alabama Crimson Tide in Nashville in October. In November, Vandy defeated the Auburn Tigers at Jordan-Hare Stadium.

Georgia Tech, 7-5, also had an exciting year with an upset over the University of Miami and nearly defeated the University of Georgia in an eight-overtime loss.

“I am excited about the opportunity. I think it’s a really good duel. Two nerdy schools. They both have killer quarterbacks,” said Trae Fields, a Georgia Tech fan.

Fans were hoping for a bowl win to carry the momentum into the offseason.

“It is a good inspiration for the coach and the players. I think recruiting will be better. I think part of our enjoyment will really depend on the idea of what the next season will be. How many more games can we play? It’s going to be a lot more fun at the stadium in Nashville when we’re celebrating, I think we’re really excited about what’s coming next,” said Will Burgin, a Vanderbilt graduate.

“Ending the season with a win is a must. Really carry that momentum into next season “People are a lot more motivated when they finish a season with a W,” said Cameron Carder, a Georgia Tech fan.
