The Lakers are reconsidering LeBron James’ scoring in 82 games amid crisis

MINNEAPOLIS — With LeBron James in the midst of his worst outside shooting slump since his rookie year, Los Angeles Lakers coach JJ Redick said he’s unsure about the veteran star’s goal of playing all 82 games this season deny that it is sustainable.

“I don’t know that it’s in his best interest and our best interest for him to do that, but if he’s good and he’s feeling good, then he should play,” Redick said after James scored 10 points on 4-of-10 shooting Points reached a season-low -16 shots from the field in LA’s 109-80 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves on Monday. “But of course we want to do it as well as possible.”

James went 0-for-4 on 3-pointers against the Wolves, extending his losing streak to 0-for-19 from long range in his last four games – his worst ever from 3-pointers since he missed 24 consecutive goals on December 26th. 2003 to January 13, 2004, according to ESPN Research.

James, who played his 1,800th career game between the regular season and playoffs combined on Monday — the most of any player ever, ahead of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (1,797) — and turns 40 later this month, also hasn’t committed Way to continue to be fit for every game this season.

“That’s a goal, but we’ll see,” James said. “That’s something I’m not discussing right now.”

James shot 25% from the field on Monday – his sixth straight game under 45%. According to ESPN Research, it’s his longest streak under 45% since 2004, when he failed to finish in 11 straight games as a rookie.

“It’s everything,” James said when asked what frustrates him about his game right now. “It’s the rhythm. I just felt like I was getting out of rhythm in the last three or four games.”

When asked what he will lean on to get his shot back, James replied: “Work. Just work. That’s all.”

James’ outside shot wasn’t the only thing he failed to do against Wolves. He had six turnovers in 31 minutes and a team-worst plus/minus ratio of minus 28. This season, the Lakers have outscored 111 points in the time James has been on the court – their worst plus/minus ratio in the team.

Just as James struggled, the Lakers struggled too. They have lost five of their last seven games and the 80 points they scored against Minnesota were the fewest the franchise has scored since January 22, 2017, when LA lost 122-73 to the Dallas Mavericks.

“I’ve never seen us play like we did at the beginning of the year,” Redick said. “I mean, I have to spend all day tomorrow with my staff trying to figure out how we can fix this.”

Anthony Davis also had a season-low against Minnesota, scoring a total of just 12 points on 4 of 14 shooting with 11 rebounds and 5 assists. He said LA players push each other on offense.

“We need to get back to our spacing,” Davis said. “When the guys try to drive, we’re kind of on top of each other. When the boys are in their places to shoot, one is directly below them. So the distance is bad.”

With a quarter of the regular season completed, the Lakers are 12-9 and in 8th place in the Western Conference. Redick described the Lakers’ season so far as “uneven and inconsistent.”

James and Davis were more explicit in their criticism.

“Sometimes we look like a team that can compete with anyone and sometimes we look like a team that looks terrible and won’t do anything this season. “So we just have to figure out what team we want to be for the rest of the season,” Davis said. “I think we’ve had games where we’ve been phenomenal and there’s been games where we’ve been disgusting, like tonight.”

James added: “Our offense is terrible right now.”
