The Lakers assumed they would cut ties with Dalton Knecht in favor of the Hawks’ $215 million star

With trade season in full swing, the Los Angeles Lakers should be looking for an immediate upgrade at the point guard position.

Acquiring a highly skilled superstar from the Atlanta Hawks could help the Lakers get out of point guard purgatory.

“The Lakers’ acquisition of Trae Young would be a monumental move and would immediately upgrade their offense with one of the league’s most dynamic playmakers,” Fadeaway World’s Eddie Bitar wrote on Tuesday.

“Young, who is currently averaging 21.5 points and 12.1 assists per game, is an elite scorer and distributor who thrives in high-pressure situations.”

“His ability to break through defenses, draw fouls and hit deep three-pointers would perfectly complement LeBron James and Anthony Davis.”

“More importantly, Young’s presence would relieve the burden of offense on LeBron and keep him energized for crucial moments in the postseason.”

“From Atlanta’s perspective, this deal could be a turning point toward a rebuild, especially with Trae Young being linked to trade rumors all season long.”

“The Hawks would receive D’Angelo Russell, a capable scorer and ball-handler who can contribute immediately, as well as Jarred Vanderbilt and Gabe Vincent, two determined, defensive-minded players who fit into Quin Snyder’s system.”

“The addition of Dalton Knecht provides shooting potential, while a 2029 first-round pick provides Atlanta with long-term flexibility.”

“This trade would signal that the Lakers are committed to fighting for the championship. While Young has limitations defensively, his offensive prowess outweighs those concerns.”

“As LeBron’s career nears its end, teaming with a proven young star like Trae ensures the Lakers can compete for titles now while shaping their future. This move is bold and risky, but it is exactly the type of risk the Lakers must take.”

The Hawks’ expectations were low entering the 2024-25 season, but thanks to Young’s consistency and impressive perimeter play, the franchise is currently in the Eastern Conference playoffs.

Young, who just scored 35 points and 10 assists against the Milwaukee Bucks, is still working on improving his efficiency, but there’s no question he’s scoring and distributing at an All-Star level early in the year.

While Young’s dynamic offensive skills would help solve the Lakers’ point guard problems, Knecht’s encouraging potential and NBA-ready demeanor would make Los Angeles hesitant to move on from their 2024 first-round pick.

However, if Young is the Lakers’ dream trade target, the organization could pull off a blockbuster trade with the Hawks this season.
