Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro is angering those who praised the killing of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson

Luigi Mangione, the man arrested Monday night in Pennsylvania in connection with the killing of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson, has been charged with murder in New York City.

New York prosecutors filed murder charges against the 26-year-old suspect hours after he was charged with gun crimes in Pennsylvania on Monday, according to a court filing. He is being held without bail in a Pennsylvania prison.

NYPD Chief Detective Joseph Kenny said Mangione will be extradited to New York to face murder charges in connection with the health insurer’s latest shooting Wednesday morning in midtown Manhattan.

Mangione’s relatives broke their silence and said they were “shocked and devastated” by the arrest and directed their “prayers to the family of Brian Thompson,” according to a statement shared by Mangione’s cousin Nino on X.

Mangione was arrested after he was spotted at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, by a patron who alerted police after recognizing him in images distributed by the NYPD last week.

He allegedly possessed a ghost gun, a silencer, “multiple fake IDs” and a handwritten manifesto that purportedly criticized the health care system, authorities said.

Mangione suffered from “debilitating back pain” and had to undergo surgery last year, a friend says

Luigi Mangione, the man charged with murdering Brian Thompson in New York City, reportedly suffered from severe back pain, prompting him to undergo surgery last year, his friend said.

His back pain was chronic and an ongoing problem for the defendant, said RJ Martin, a friend of Mangione and a spokesman for Surfbreak, a Honolulu condominium where Mangione lived for about six months The New York Times.

Martin told the newspaper that Mangione moved to Hawaii in hopes of getting as healthy as possible before major back surgery.

The injury kept Mangione from surfing and affected his romantic life, the spokesman said.

“His spine was kind of misaligned,” Martin said The times. “He said his lower vertebrae were almost half a centimeter apart and I think it pinched a nerve. Sometimes he was fine, sometimes he wasn’t.”

Martin said Mangione eventually underwent spinal surgery in 2023.

Mangione sent him a photo of his X-ray, which “looked hideous, with just huge screws in his spine,” Martin told CNN.
