“The Lion King” takes holiday crown at the UK and Ireland box office

Disney’s “Mufasa: The Lion King” topped the UK and Irish box office with 4.4 million pounds ($5.5 million) in its debut weekend, according to Comscore figures up to December 23.

As the festive season reaches its peak, Universal’s Wicked continues to enchant in its fifth frame, bringing in £2.5m, taking its grand total to £48.2m. Disney’s Moana 2 came in third with £2m, taking its four-week profit to £29.7m.

Studiocanal’s Paddington in Peru held steady in fourth place, adding £653,489 in its seventh weekend for a total of £31.3m. Paramount’s Gladiator II rounded out the top five with £497,569, reaching £29.6m after six weeks.

In sixth place, Black Bear’s Conclave received £331,308 for a total of £4.9 million, while Trafalgar Releasing’s Royal Opera House ballet Ivanov/Wright The Nutcracker earned £227,082 in seventh place. Sony’s Kraven the Hunter took £171,942 in eighth place, bringing its total to £1.2 million, while Park Circus’ 75th anniversary re-release It’s a Wonderful Life took £140,143 in ninth place brought in. Coming in at number 10 was Warner Bros. Red One collected £130,014 and has amassed £8m in seven weeks.

On Christmas Day, Bakrania Media will release Bollywood action film Baby John starring Varun Dhawan, Keerthy Suresh, Wamiqa Gabbi and Jackie Shroff.

On Boxing Day, Michael Gracey’s Robbie Williams film “Better Man” opens in over 300 locations from Entertainment Film Distributors, while Elysian Film Group brings Studio Ghibli’s “Spirited Away” back to cinemas. Other releases include global Thai hit and Oscar contender “How To Make Millions Before Grandma Dies” from Vertigo Releasing and Justin Kurzel’s Venice-bending crime thriller “The Order,” starring Jude Law and Nicholas Hoult, from MetFilm Distribution. Universal will also release a sing-along version of “Wicked.”

The week ends with “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” on December 27th.
