The Los Angeles budget prioritizes homeless spending over fire department spending

Los Angeles’s budget is in the spotlight as multiple wildfires rage in the city and news that Mayor Karen Bass cut the fire department’s budget last year while prioritizing spending on the city’s homeless population.

For the 2023-2024 fiscal year, Los Angeles has budgeted $837 million for the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD), about 65% of the $1.3 billion homelessness budget.

An analysis last year by L.A.’s city comptroller found that about half of the homelessness budget went unspent.
