PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Another round of snow 1 to 3 inches is expected to fall widely across the Pittsburgh area starting during the Friday evening commute.

Snow will fall around 5 to 6 p.m. Friday and continue through the first part of the day Saturday, with widespread 1 to 3 inches by mid-morning. North of Pittsburgh, along with the Laurel Highlands and mountain ranges, could see 2 to 4 inches.

There will still be a few flakes throughout the day, but most of the snow that forms in the afternoon will remain in the Laurel Highlands and ridges and north, so heavier accumulation is possible in those areas.

A winter weather advisory is in effect until 1 a.m. Sunday. If you travel on Saturday, be careful.

On Sunday, high temperatures in the Pittsburgh area will approach normal near freezing, but will still be below normal for temperatures through mid to late January.

Next week the region will see several more mornings with lows in the teens and single digits with highs only in the 20s, meaning the snow will remain on the ground and the icy weather will continue for a while.

Pittsburgh says a “hiccup” in salt delivery does not affect treatment

Pittsburgh Public Works said its road crews will monitor snow and activate winter weather protocols to treat over 1,200 miles of city streets.

“To be completely transparent, we had a slight issue with the Three Rivers Terminal and our salt shipment this week. These were factors that were beyond the city’s control or even Three Rivers’ control,” said Chris Hornstein, Pittsburgh’s public works director.

He says they were affected by Winter Storm Blair.

“We’ve had to pivot a little bit with the types of salt we have, but from our perspective it’s just a hiccup,” he said.

This means that the salt they brought with them the previous day and will add more on Saturday does not contain magnesium.

“It works up to 17 degrees. It is mixed with magnesium salt. Temperatures over 17 degrees are also predicted here. So we have no reason to worry,” he said.

Residents who would like to report icy roads or areas that have not been plowed 24 hours after the snowfall can call 412-255-2621 or 311.

Pittsburgh residents can track snow plows online. If you live in Allegheny County, you can use this map to see who is responsible for plowing your road – whether it’s the county, state or municipality.
