The Memphis Grizzlies are close to returning

Memphis Grizzlies rookie center Zach Edey is close to returning. Edey has missed the last five games with an ankle injury.

He suffered the injury on November 17th against the Denver Nuggets. Before the injury, Edey played four straight games with at least double-digit points and at least three offensive rebounds.

Edey has done 1-on-0 work recently and will start to get stronger late this week or early next, Grizzlies coach Taylor Jenkins said.

“I would imagine we can do some more movement training on him in the next few days, hopefully on the shorter end,” Jenkins said.

When Edey was active, the Grizzlies (12-7) were one of the best offensive rebounding teams in the NBA.

Edey is averaging 11.1 points and 6.9 rebounds per game. He was drafted in the first round with the No. 9 pick in the 2024 NBA Draft.

After Friday, the Grizzlies play at home against the Indiana Pacers on Sunday (2:30 p.m., FanDuel Sports Network).

The schedule will feature an increase in competition next week. Memphis plays last season’s conference champions – the Dallas Mavericks and the Boston Celtics – on Tuesday and Saturday, respectively. Between these away games on Thursday there will also be a home game against a top-class Sacramento Kings team.
