The Met Office weather map shows when the UK can expect more snow ahead of the New Year

Snow is expected to hit the UK in 2024-25, with some parts of the country expected to have a white New Year’s Day, according to the latest weather maps.

The Met Office’s long-term forecast for December 30 to January 8 warns that colder air is moving south, increasing the chance of sleet and snow as the new year begins. The forecast said: “As colder air moves south from the north, the risk of sleet and snow increases, particularly in northern areas, but this will depend on where the thermal boundary lies each day.”

The meteorologist’s map shows snow will fall across the north of Scotland, including Fort William, Loch Rannoch and Pitlochry, early on New Year’s Day.

Forecasters say temperatures are expected to be around average at first, but will fall below average in most areas, particularly in the north, although there may still be occasional milder spells in the south. However, the Met Office notes that while there is moderate to high confidence in this trend, the exact positioning of the weather systems that determine which areas will receive rain or snow is uncertain.

This follows the Met Office’s earlier forecast that milder weather around Christmas was likely to give way to cooler and rainier conditions in the New Year. Meteorologist Tom Morgan said: “As we approach the New Year we could see a shift towards cooler and wetter conditions more broadly.”

He added that while the likelihood of snow was increasing, it was currently unclear exactly when and where it would fall, saying: “There could be heavy rain at times and the likelihood of snow increasing – but it is still there.” early to say where.” that it will snow.

Forecasts become difficult after the New Year as it is still too early to make accurate predictions about weather conditions. Currently the Met Office says: “Confidence for this period is fairly low, but compared to the previous period there remains a chance that rather unsettled and cool conditions will continue initially, with the wettest conditions possibly more concentrated to the south.” on There is still a risk of snow on the northern edge, with sleet and snow showers further north.

“Then something more climatic could return through the rest of January, with the wettest and coolest conditions further north, and with higher pressure further south, it is more likely to be drier and at times milder here than elsewhere.”
