The National Guard invades LA and imposes a curfew to curb “despicable” looting

National Guard troops moved into California on Friday to help restore law and order as “despicable” looting took place in some areas, leading to at least 20 arrests and a strict curfew overnight.

Guardsmen were seen patrolling the streets and assisting residents in areas affected by the devastating fires, which have become the most devastating fires in Los Angeles history.

“The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department has officially requested assistance from the California National Guard for both fires,” said LA County Sheriff Robert Luna.

“They will support us in traffic control and protecting critical infrastructure.”

The move will better free up sheriffs and other local authorities to crack down on callous thieves looting homes evacuated by the area’s deadly fires, officials said.

“I promise you, you will be held accountable,” L.A. County Supervisor Kathryn Barger said at a news conference Thursday. “A shame for those who exploit our residents in this time of crisis.”

A 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew in areas affected by the Palisades and Eaton fires — including areas with multimillion-dollar properties owned by celebrities — was also implemented to try to control the problem, authorities said.

“Last night and this morning there were up to 20 people who decided to go to our areas and deprive these poor people who have been through so much of their property – absolutely unacceptable,” Luna said on Thursday.

“You can’t be in these affected areas,” he said. “If so, you could face arrest.”

At least 20 people have already been arrested for looting, the sheriff said.

“The people who have already been arrested know that this will not end well,” said Los Angeles District Attorney Nathan Hochman, calling the looters’ actions a “despicable crime.”

Prosecutors added that citizens who operate drones during the crisis and disrupt the fight to contain the fires “will be arrested, prosecuted and punished to the fullest extent of the law.”

The threat came when a firefighting plane was hit by one of the unmanned aerial vehicles, disabling the crucial plane with a damaged wing, officials said.

Hochman said criminals are already taking advantage of the tragic situation with GoFundMe scams.

“My message to the public is: Beware of these scammers. Don’t let them take advantage of you,” he said.
