The National Weather Service urges caution as slushy snow could affect Thanksgiving travelers

The National Weather Service advises driving with caution this Thanksgiving as slushy snow is expected.

Meteorologist Kaitlyn Lardeo said snow will begin falling late Wednesday evening and continue well into Thanksgiving Day.

“In parts of Central New York they will be two to four inches tall,” Lardeo said. “At higher elevations, up to 15 cm or more could be visible.”

Asked what residents should do, Lardeo urged travelers to slow down and “take it easy.”

“It will be muddy and slippery, so drive slower as you normally would in winter conditions and know it’s on the road,” she said.

The National Weather Service issued a hazardous weather outlook for northern and southern Oneida County and Madison County, saying in a statement: “We encourage everyone to keep an eye on the weather forecast, especially if traveling for the holidays.”

Winter weather after Thanksgiving

As Black Friday begins, parts of the region north of central New York will see lake-effect snow on Friday and into the weekend.

Areas such as Syracuse could see temperatures exceeding 40°C, while higher elevations could see temperatures exceeding 30°C.
