The New York sports world reacts to the death of Rickey Henderson

Rickey Henderson, Hall of Famer and MLB stolen base leader, died Friday evening at age 65, his family announced Saturday.

Henderson caught 1,406 bases in a 25-year career that spanned four decades. He began his MLB career with the Oakland A’s in 1979 and played for nine teams. Henderson played for both New York teams, the Yankees (1985-89) and the Mets (1999-2000).

The New York sports world paused Saturday to remember their friend and teammate, posting on social media:

Hall of Famer and former Yankee teammate Dave Winfield wrote on Instagram: “I still can’t believe I lost one of my favorite teammates and great friend Rickey Henderson. Rest in peace.”

Rickey Henderson will be featured at New York Yankees Old-Timers' Day on June 23, 2013.

“It was an honor to wear the same uniform as Rickey Henderson. He was the most entertaining and dynamic player I have ever seen. RIP Rickey U was the greatest!” Former Mets manager Bobby Valentine wrote on social media.

Former Mets teammate and fellow Hall of Famer Mike Piazza posted on He was one of the most generous, hysterical and kind people.” He will be sorely missed. Prayers for his soul and his family.
