The NFL continues to dominate the ratings with a great result on Saturday, the first round of the CFP delivers strong numbers

The NFL once again proved it is king with a strong performance in the scoring department in its two games Saturday afternoon against competition from the College Football Playoff.

According to Sports Media Watch, 15.4 million viewers watched the Baltimore Ravens’ win over the Pittsburgh Steelers on Fox and 15.5 million viewers watched the late afternoon game on NBC in which the Kansas City Chiefs beat the Houston Texans.

Saturday afternoon’s CFP first-round games aired on TNT, TBS and truTV. Texas’ win over Clemson brought in 8.6 million viewers and Penn State beat SMU with 6.4 million viewers. The two evening games – Ohio State beat Tennessee (14.3 million) and Notre Dame beat Indiana (13.4 million) – each delivered strong numbers without competition from the NFL.

Although two NFL games went head-to-head and the results ended in setbacks, the CFP numbers were very good in context. Overall, the four games averaged 10.6 million viewers, with Tennessee-Ohio State and Indiana-Notre Dame providing two of the three biggest audiences of the season in college football.

Clemson-Texas and SMU-Penn State were the two most-watched college football games broadcast exclusively on cable this season.
