The NFL world is criticizing Campbell for refusing to play for the 49ers-Rams

The NFL world criticizes Campbell for refusing to play with the 49ers – the Rams originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area

Friday morning was a rare day in the world of sports media.

In a rare occurrence, experts across multiple platforms shared the same opinion on a hot topic from Thursday night’s 49ers-Los Angeles Rams game. San Francisco linebacker De’Vondre Campbell is on everyone’s lips after refusing to play in the decisive game.

Now media representatives are not holding back in their criticism of the situation.

Here is a summary of some of the reactions:

“If it were me, he would have been cut before he left the locker room,” ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith said on “First Take.” “As a San Francisco 49er, he wouldn’t have made it out of the locker room. I’ll be honest: his career is in grave danger. And that’s how it should be.”

“You don’t want a teammate like that. De’Vondre Campbell should be ashamed. There is no excuse for what he did.”

“I suspected that De’Vondre Campbell was a double agent. I suspected that De’Vondre Campbell was a traitor,” Emmanuel Acho said on FS1’s “The Facility.” “The 49ers are a team, historically an organization of toughness. Ronnie Lott, a historical great, cut off his finger just so he could play in a game. My dear friend Marquise Goodwin, his wife had a stillbirth the day before (and) he plays in the game and catches a touchdown and prays to heaven just to try to get on the field. Six weeks later he was shot and played.

“Fred Warner had a broken ankle and played the entire season. Charvarius Ward lost a child and played this season. George Kittle has ribbons held together by a string. Dre Greenlaw tore his Achilles tendon and played 10 months later. And all you have, De’Vondre Campbell, is all you have? Players have broken bones children. And all you have is a bruised ego.

“He has to remember that he has no deposits in the emotional bank account of the San Francisco 49ers. “Dre Greenlaw has all these moves,” ESPN’s Ryan Clark said on “Get Up.” “If you remember when that man ran down the sideline and tore his Achilles tendon, the 49ers weren’t just crushed, the first thing No. 15 said. The Chiefs said, ‘Dre Greenlaw is down.’

“That’s the kind of man you replaced. … In my opinion, he should never play as a fraternity again. Why would you want him on your team?”

“There’s no way he’s going back in that locker room. “No way,” said James Jones in “The Facility.” “…letting your brothers down and walking off the field, and you’re 100 percent healthy and ready to play, and you’re watching your brothers have the ball shoved down their throats at the position you play – that they need help with that – – and you’re in your feelings because some playing time has nothing to do with Dre Greenlaw. Nothing to do with (Talanoa) Hufanga.

“Leaving the team and not conquering the football field is nonsense, you know the rest.”

Even fans joined the discussion on social media and shared similar viewpoints.

It’s not often that sports pundits and fans share the same views on an issue, but the Campbell situation was one of those rarities.
