The NY Giants QB will start for Tommy DeVito against Dallas Cowboys

Drew Lock has played exactly one snap in the New York Giants’ starting offense since June, and that was when Tommy DeVito had to leave for a play in last Sunday’s 30-7 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

That will soon change for Lock.

Lock is expected to start as the Giants’ quarterback for their Thanksgiving Day game against the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday afternoon, two people with knowledge of the situation told NorthJersey.com. A right forearm injury will likely keep DeVito inactive – he’s only available as a third quarterback in an emergency – and Tim Boyle serves as Lock’s backup as the Giants (2-9) try to end a six-game losing streak.

“Typical of the job: you always have to be ready,” said Lock. “No matter what week, no matter what the situation is, the plan has to be to prepare like you’re going to go in there and play. And we’ll see how the rest of the week unfolds.”

DeVito did not travel with the team to Texas on Wednesday afternoon. He stayed back and underwent further examination to determine the severity of the injury and the scans were clear.

The former Don Bosco star later joined the Giants on a separate flight after his tests and diagnosis were completed.

Initially, DeVito believed his sore forearm was just part of the general pain associated with his first game action since August, when he replaced Daniel Jones, who started the first 10 games before being waived at his request after being benched was set.

Jones will reportedly be signed to the practice squad of the Minnesota Vikings, the team he helped defeat in his best moment as a Giant in the 2022 NFC playoffs. Now he joins them.

On the other hand, had this been a typical week with more time to recover, DeVito would have had a much better chance of playing. The Giants chose to start DeVito instead of Lock, even though he had served as the No. 2 quarterback all season.

“I’m going to handle this like a pro. I will be professional. I’m proud of that,” Lock said when coach Brian Daboll announced the decision. “I’m not going to be the guy that tears the locker room apart. I have to build it. I know it’s good for this team to win and play well at the quarterback position on Sunday, and I’m going to try to help (DeVito) do everything we can.”

Now in his sixth season, Lock spent the past two years with the Seahawks as QB2 behind Geno Smith after Seattle acquired him from the Denver Broncos as part of the Russell Wilson trade in 2022. Last year, he went 1-1 in two starts while Smith was sidelined with a groin injury, losing to the 49ers before beating the Eagles on “Monday Night Football.”

Lock also appeared in Monday night’s game against the Giants at MetLife Stadium, while Smith was sidelined with injury before his return. He has completed nearly 60% of his passes for 28 touchdowns and 23 interceptions in 31 games over his five-year career.

Lock has a big arm and there was little hesitation in his game when it came to attacking downfield. This has led to some reckless plays in his career. As a Giant, he missed three weeks in August with oblique and hip injuries, and that downtime slowed his adjustment.
