Dec. 21 (UPI) — The New York Police Department’s top uniformed officer, known as the Chief of Department, unexpectedly resigned Saturday amid allegations that he demanded sexual favors from a subordinate.

Jeffrey Maddrey, a close ally of New York City Mayor Eric Adams and a 33-year veteran of the NYPD, has tendered his resignation, Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch announced.

The resignation came hours after the New York Post reported that Maddrey had demanded sexual favors from a female lieutenant in exchange for overtime pay worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.

“Last evening I accepted the resignation of Department Head Jeffrey Maddrey,” Tisch said in a statement released Saturday. “The NYPD takes all allegations of sexual misconduct seriously and will investigate this matter thoroughly.”

She announced that Chief John Chell will take over as interim department chief, while Chief Philip Rivera will now serve as interim patrol chief.

Despite his previous support for Maddrey in the face of previous allegations of misconduct, Adams distanced himself from the former boss in the latest case of corruption allegations surrounding his administration.

“The police commissioner is conducting a full review of all personnel, but she is also conducting a full review of this issue,” Adams told reporters. “I have a lot of trust and the city has a lot of trust in Police Commissioner Tisch. It is conducting its review internally and we will decide how to proceed with these allegations.”

The FBI has joined a city Department of Investigation investigation into allegations of fraudulent overtime and sexual misconduct against Maddrey, The New York Times reported.

The Post story featured graphic allegations from Lt. Quathisha Epps, who claimed the chief “regularly exploited her and solicited sex at NYPD headquarters.”

She had previously been the subject of reports showing that Epps was the top earner in the entire NYPD in 2023, raking in $400,000, including around $204,000 in overtime alone, while working as an administrative clerk in Maddrey’s office.

Epps has been suspended for 30 days and is under investigation for excessive overtime, police sources told The Post.

Maddrey’s resignation has contributed to recent unrest and turnover in NYPD leadership as Adams faces federal indictment on corruption charges.

Since September, several people have left his administration, including former NYPD Commissioner Edward Caban, who left on September 12 amid a federal investigation into nightclub enforcement.

The previous commissioner, Keechant Sewell, resigned unexpectedly in June 2023 and without giving reasons.

Tisch was appointed to the position just last month, making her the fourth commissioner under Adams’ administration.
