The only person who decides what Kamala Harris does next is Kamala Harris

This is an adapted excerpt from the Dec 17 Episode of “Deadline: White House.”

During Vice President Kamala Harris’ first speech since her election loss to President-elect Donald Trump, she urged the crowd of young community leaders in Maryland to “stay in the fight.”

“Many people have come to me and told me that they feel tired, maybe even resigned, people who have told me that they are not sure they have the strength, let alone the desire, to stay in the fight Harris said. “We have to stay in the fight. Every one of us.”

I’ll be honest, the last few weeks have been tough. I share the same feelings as many Americans: disappointment and sometimes anger and depression about where we are. I think after the election everyone just wanted to switch off. It was all just too much.

But that’s why what Harris said in that speech is so important. She calls on us all to stop wallowing in our grief over what happened and to get to work. I was happy to see such a strong and capable leader out there, not wagging her finger, but coming closer and saying to everyone, ‘Hey, come on, guys.’ We have things to fight for.”

During Harris’ historically short presidential campaign, we learned how much strength she has and saw her impressive communication skills in action. I think we’ll see them out there more in the coming weeks and months, trying to encourage us to get through the malaise we’re feeling after November.

There has also been some discussion about what Harris will do next. Is she running for governor of California? Is she preparing for another run for the White House in four years? Or will she retire from politics and take on a new challenge?

The Vice President has some important decisions to make, and I won’t blame her no matter what she decides. California would certainly benefit from having Harris as governor. She is fully capable of running for president again. She also has the opportunity to do other things and explore life outside of elected office if she chooses. In each of these roles, Harris will be able to make an impact and make an impact.

Harris has many options and she deserves time to explore them. Do you know who will decide what she does next at the end of the day? She will.
