The Orange County and Chatham County school districts are requesting a two-hour delay for Tuesday, citing driving conditions

After two days of precipitation and low temperatures, the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City School District requested Tuesday morning classes be postponed by two hours.

CHCCS administrators sent the alert to families Monday at 4:30 p.m. With temperatures expected to reach or fall below freezing overnight, there is concern about the possibility of ice or slippery patches on the roads.

“We want our employees, students and families to have more time (and daylight) on Tuesday to carefully walk, bike or drive to schools and offices,” said Andy Jenks, chief communications officer, in of the message. “This also gives our teams more time to treat school driveways, sidewalks and shaded areas to keep the school safe.”

The decision came after CHCCS began normal operations Monday, marking the return of classes for teachers and students after winter break — and after parts of the Triangle experienced sleet and wintry mix Sunday afternoon into the evening.

Orange County Schools also announced a two-hour delay for Tuesday operations after announcing one on Monday, and Chatham County Schools also announced a two-hour delay.

The National Weather Service forecasts that Orange County and surrounding areas will experience subfreezing temperatures around 9 p.m. Monday, rising back above 32 degrees Tuesday morning. Since NWS-operated rain gauges in the county recorded about a half-inch of rain from Sunday evening through Monday, the community could be among the areas at risk for roads having frozen spots from runoff or pudding.
