The Panthers’ promising rookie Jonathon Brooks suffered a torn ACL three weeks after recovering from the same injury

The Carolina Panthers’ fears regarding their rookie running back Jonathon Brooks were confirmed on Monday when the second-round pick suffered another torn ACL, ruling him out for the remainder of the season.

It’s a sad situation for Brooks, the second-round pick out of Texas, as he tore the same right ACL in his final season with the Longhorns that he recovered from last year, the team announced Monday.

Brooks only returned to the Panthers three weeks ago, but after the ligament repair, extensive rehab is on the agenda.

The injury was a non-contact situation when Brooks attempted to cut to his left and struck his right foot, but he quickly went down as he felt something was wrong. It was just the first quarter against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Brooks attempted to run to the sideline under his own power, but fell to the turf and needed help to leave the field.

The running back tore his ACL in November during Texas’ run into the College Football Playoff, which was a blow not only to the Longhorns but also to Brooks’ draft stock.

Brooks totaled 1,139 rushing yards and 286 receiving yards with 11 total touchdowns in 11 games for the Longhorns before his injury in 2023 – his first year as a lead back in college football.

Many believed he would be a first-round pick based on his success in Austin last year, but he fell to the second round, where the Panthers took him 46th overall after the ACL injury. Teams knew he needed time to continue rehab and the Panthers were willing to help him in that process.

There were some who questioned whether Brooks should even see the field this season, as Carolina was once again having a tough time after going 2-15 last season.

But Brooks was on the field, making his NFL debut in Week 12 against the Kansas City Chiefs, even as Chuba Hubbard continued to lead the way on offense.
