Purchasing power in Hamm: An analysis

In Hamm, people have little money left over, as an analysis by the German Economic Institute shows. The city ranks 372nd out of 400 districts and independent cities in Germany. This calculation is based on data from 2022 and 2023. The institute puts the purchasing power in Hamm at 22,573 euros per capita. The basis of the calculation is the income, i.e. income, minus expenses, i.e. the cost of living.

Factors for regional differences

Although the cost of living in Hamm is relatively low (ranking 88th out of 400), the net income is also low, putting Hamm at number 390th out of 400. Other Ruhr area cities such as Gelsenkirchen, Duisburg, Herne, Oberhausen and Dortmund are also at the lower end of the scale. Münster is also below the national average, which is due to the large number of students. Purchasing power is generally significantly higher in rural areas. According to IW, the decisive factor for the differences in price levels is housing costs.
