The Raiders’ comeback attempt fails in Kansas City

The Las Vegas Raiders were just a play or two away from pulling off another holiday upset against the Kansas City Chiefs, but fell 19-17 in the NFL’s second-ever Black Friday game.

The Raiders were plagued by penalties in all three phases of the game in the first half, committing six penalties for 55 yards in the first two quarters.

Regardless, the defense’s playmaking limited the Chiefs’ offense in some key moments. Jack Jones intercepted a pass from DeAndre Hopkins, forcing Kansas City to settle for a 25-yard field goal on the first drive. Two possessions later, K’Lavon Chaisson sacked Patrick Mahomes on third down.

The Raiders’ offense got into the scoring zone on two drives in the first half, but could not reach the end zone. A few dimes from Aidan O’Connell to Jakobi Meyers put Daniel Carlson in perfect position for a 27-yard field goal that made the game 3-0.

However, on their ensuing possession, Carlson was unable to make a 56-yard field goal – the Chiefs then capitalized on a six-yard touchdown pass from Mahomes to Justin Watson. The result gave Kansas City a 10-3 halftime lead.

The Silver and Black’s inability to finish their attacks with points continued into the start of the second half. After driving down the field to the Kansas City 31-yard line, Ameer Abdullah was stuffed for a loss on fourth-and-1. The Chiefs responded with another field goal from Matthew Wright to make it 13-3.

The ensuing drive ended with another uncharacteristic missed field goal attempt from more than 50 yards for the Raiders, giving the ball back to Kansas City, where Wright made his third field goal of the game, giving the Chiefs a two-possession lead provided.
