The record is achievable, but the Eagles have bigger goals

PHILADELPHIA – Eagles running back Saquon Barkley is now one of nine players in NFL history to rush for 2,000 yards in a season.

The dynamic back made it on his 31st and final carry in the 41-7 win over Dallas Sunday, clinching the NFC East with a 13-3 win over Philadelphia and at least the No. 2 seed in the NFC.

The historic run went 23 yards from the left tackle and brought Barkley to 2,005 yards this season and eclipsed Eric Dickerson’s all-time rushing record of 2,105 yards set 40 years ago in 1984.

Everyone on the Eagles wants the record, and some of Barkley’s teammates seem to want it more than the superstar ball carrier himself.

Of course, the chance for Barkley to make it in Week 18 against his former team, the New York Giants, is certainly not a missed opportunity for Barkley.

I’m not going to lie, but reaching a milestone as a fan of the game and the running back position and placing myself up there with eight other backs that I respect and some of them that I grew up watching means definitely a lot,” Barkley said. “At the same time, this wouldn’t be possible for me without this team.

“Like I said, you can’t be great without the greatness of others, and I’m just glad I was able to be part of the team and reach such a milestone.”

According to a team source, 2,000 yards in 16 games was Barkley’s biggest milestone, and while he would be happy about the record, playing in a meaningless game just to get the record is not his priority.

Whether Week 18 against the Giants means anything for the Eagles will depend on what Minnesota does late Sunday afternoon against the Packers, 13-2, along with Detroit’s fate, 13-2, in San Francisco on Monday night.

“There’s a lot that goes into it,” head coach Nick Sirianni said. “We’ll watch a few games tonight and see how things go. “Like I said, I have a lot to think about. I’ll enjoy it and think about it sometime tonight.”

Star left tackle Jordan Mailata wasn’t shy when asked about playing next week, even if there’s no seeding in play.

“Absolutely,” Mailata said, “… “It’s an opportunity to make history.” We tried today just because we didn’t meet your coach. We never really talked about the Giants next week, but we just felt like if we didn’t try today we might sit out.”

Right tackle Lane Johnson pleaded in the huddle: “Let’s get the record.”

“We all said it,” Mailata said. “…Why don’t we do it now? That was the attitude all along.”

The mindset now shifts to more important goals.

“We’re going to do what we have to do, what’s right for the football team,” Sirianni said. “We always have to do the right thing for the football team to achieve our goals.”
