The Red Sox brothers are divided over Alex Bregman as a free agency splash

A house divided can complicate things, and that appears to be the case with the Red Sox and their pursuit of free agent Alex Bregman.

According to MassLive, the Red Sox are among the teams believed to be strong candidates for Bregman, but that pursuit becomes a little more complicated because some within the organization are not as optimistic about Bregman as others.

According to the report, Boston manager Alex Cora and team president Sam Kennedy are enthusiastic about the idea of bringing in Bregman.

However, Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow and other members of the baseball operations staff are somewhat wary of the Gold Glove winner.

The exact reason for Breslow’s hesitation is a bit of a mystery, according to the report, but could have something to do with the decline in his OPS over the last two seasons, which fell from .891 in 2022 to .804 in 2023 then dropped to .768 in last season.

Cora was part of the coaching staff in Houston during Bregman’s first full year in the majors and saw firsthand what the infielder can do.

“He is a complete player. He’s a player who has played on winning teams throughout his career – a good defender, he’s really good offensively. He’s a guy that a lot of people talk about and I believe he can have an impact on a big league team, a championship caliber team. He’s that type of player,” Cora told reporters at the winter meetings in Dallas on Monday.

Bregman is expected to receive a contract worth approximately $200 million for at least seven years.

Other teams expected to be in the hunt for Bregman include the Yankees and Tigers, as well as the Astros, where he has played his entire career.

Last month, he turned down a $156 million, six-year stay in Houston.
