The Red Sox could trade for this high-profile slugger

The Boston Red Sox missed out on signing Juan Soto and are reportedly changing their options as they regroup at the MLB Winter Meetings.

ESPN’s Alden Gonzalez shared his thoughts on Boston’s pursuit of free agent right-hander Teoscar Hernández. However, another MLB insider believes the Red Sox are focused on starting pitching or starting a third baseman.

“The question now is how do the losing teams in the Soto sweepstakes recover?” Bob Nightengale of USA Today wrote Sunday evening. “The Yankees are now expected to make a serious push for free agent first baseman Christian Walker, make a run at third baseman Alex Bregman and perhaps trade for Chicago Cubs outfielder/first baseman Cody Bellinger.

“The Red Sox want to sign either starter Max Fried or Corbin Burnes, who is being pursued by the San Francisco Giants. The Red Sox want at least Fried or Burnes and could trade for Nolan Arenado from the St. Louis Cardinals.”

Arenado from the Cardinals? What about Rafael Devers? He already occupies the left corner of the baseball diamond at Fenway Park. Manager Alex Cora on Monday debunked the notion that Devers wouldn’t man third base in Boston.

Interestingly, Nightengale also noted that the Toronto Blue Jays are in the hunt for sluggers Anthony Santander or Hernández, but did not mention that the Red Sox or Yankees would pursue the latter. Hernández has been linked to the Red Sox for some time, so it would be shocking if Boston moved on from the All-Star completely.
