LET’S TALK ABOUT REDS BASEBALL. OUR SPORTS TEAM WAS IN DALLAS FOR THE MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL WINTER MEETINGS. And after a year away from baseball, new Reds manager Terry Francona is bringing plenty of energy to the organization this offseason. SPORTS HOST CHARLIE CLIFFORD CHECKS WITH TITO IN TEXAS. Guys, thank you very much, Terry, thank you very much for taking a few minutes. VERY busy week here. We saw you get pulled over. ARE YOU THE MAYOR OF THE 2024 WINTER MEETINGS? You know, I think if you’ve played, coached, and managed just about any team, you’ll know pretty much every coach, every clubhouse type, and every travel type. BUT AND THIS IS A PART OF WHAT ACTUALLY LOVE. I mean, in our game and in you guys, just in the personalities and the friendships, that’s the beauty of our game. CINCINNATI LOVES A GREAT BASEBALL STORY. YOU HAVE ONE. Growing up, was there ever a day when baseball wasn’t an obsession? NO. TERRY FRANCONA, NO, NO. I mean, my whole life, aside from two weeks of taking a real estate course, all it was was baseball. YES. And for good reason. NO. And I, I know, and I always knew how lucky I was to be able to do something that I was going to do whether they paid me or not. That’s pretty lucky. They spent some time on the road checking in with a handful of players, including ELLY DE LA CRUZ. THE BEST PART OF MEETING ELLY IN THE DOMINICAN. What was it like when I left that conversation? BEST PART OF EVERY MEETING WITH A PLAYER? As you know, I had lunch with Nick Lodolo here about a month ago, when you see him face to face and you see his eyes light up or, you know, you listen to them talk about what they are want. It’s just the beginning of this relationship that becomes truly special. And you can’t be around guys for 162 games and not get close to them. And that’s partly because I don’t think people fully understand that you can deliver a message. SOMETIMES THEY DON’T WANT TO HEAR IT BECAUSE THEY TRUST THEM, BUT IF YOU’RE IN A LEADERSHIP POSITION YOU WILL UNIVITELY HAVE TO TELL SOME THINGS THAT YOU DON’T ALWAYS WANT TO HEAR. Was there a moment where you felt like, OK, I’m the manager of the CINCINNATI REDS? THIS FEELS REAL NOW. You know, it actually felt like that a little too quickly. When I was talking to Nick and Brad, I found myself saying, “We.” And I’m like, “Wow, slow down, big guy.” That was in your living room? YES. And I’m sitting on my rocking chair. You know, Nick is sitting sideways because of my couch, but I felt it pretty quickly, and luckily I think they felt it too. And we came out of that with, you know, sitting in the suite listening to these people talk. I don’t feel like I’m the new guy anymore, which is a really good feeling. TERRY FRANCONA, ALL REDS BASEBALL. We can’t wait to see you at the Goodyear. GOOD LUCK AT THE WINTER MEETINGS. THANK YOU. So if you’re a Reds fan, pinch yourself. TWO-TIME WORLD SERIES CHAMPION TERRY FRANCONA AND TAKE A YOUNG CLEVELAND TEAM TO THE WORLD SERIES.

The Reds trade relief pitcher Fernando Cruz to the Yankees for catcher

The Cincinnati Reds made a trade for a catcher late Friday night, sending a relief pitcher to the New York Yankees. The Reds sent right-handed pitcher Fernando Cruz and catcher Alex Jackson to the Yankees in exchange for catcher Jose Trevino. The 34-year-old Cruz has been a pitcher for the Reds each of the past three seasons and made his major debut in 2022 at age 32. In 141 games over three seasons, Cruz recorded a 4.52 ERA and 228 strikeouts. The veteran was often used in late game situations by former manager David Bell. In 2024, Cruz struck out 109 batters in just over 66 innings pitched, utilizing a split-finger delivery that was among baseball’s most untouchable throws last season. In Trevino, the Reds are acquiring a 32-year-old backstop who spent the first four seasons of his career with the Texas Rangers before joining the Yankees in 2022. Never known for his offensive talent, Trevino was named to the American League All-Star team in 2022 thanks to his glove. The Texas native also won a Gold Glove in New York this season. In seven seasons in the MLB, Trevino has hit .236 with 32 home runs and a .637 OPS. Defensively, Baseball-Reference credits Trevino with 45 defensive runs saved behind home plate. With Tyler Stephenson anchored in Terry Francona’s Reds starting lineup, Trevino will likely begin the season as the Reds’ backup catcher.
