After The newbie was missing from the fall television schedule, the seventh season of the ABC procedural will finally premiere on January 7 as part of the 2025 television schedule. As the series (hopefully) resolves some cliffhangers in the season six finale, The newbie returns to old habits by bringing in some serialized elements while still being a standalone show. In addition, there is another big change and the fans have that of Michael Mann heat to thank.

The long-awaited Season 7 premiere will be split into two parts, so there’s a lot to look forward to. Filming began in the summer and BTS from production shows that there is a lot of reason to be excited for the new season as much of the cast worked together and prepared for what looked like a major defeat. Creator and showrunner Alexi Hawley told TVLine that the run-and-gun scenes in the first two episodes were filmed slightly differently to get more of the action:

I directed the first film and wanted to “re-steer” a bit on several fronts. One of them was that I wanted to make it kind of bigger and more action-packed in places, so you definitely feel that. And Bill Roe, our producer/director, directed the second film and it’s great.

Naturally, The newbie has already seen some big action scenes and has left fans on the edge of their seats more than once. But knowing that the price tag for season seven will be even higher makes things even more exciting, especially after the season six finale saw two of the show’s biggest criminals escape from prison. Furthermore, it seems like the shootings are about to get even bigger as the show pays homage to the 1995 film directed by Michael Mann heat with Al Pacino and Robert De Niro:

Yes, we really tried hard and tried to get as big as possible. And there are some Heat tributes in there. I’m really happy with how these two turned out.

The film, which was a box office success as it grossed $187.4 million on a budget of $60 million, followed the conflict between an LAPD detective and a career thief, with numerous professional and personal relationships and quite a bit of action . It sounds like the action will be ramped up again in Season 7 and it will be interesting to see what happens next. Because the waiting The newbie took longer than most shows airing in the 2024-25 season, it seems like the show’s team really wanted to crank up the “heat” to make it totally worth the wait.
