The search for a man who fell overboard on a cruise bound for the Bahamas has been called off

The cruise company says the “extensive” search for a 51-year-old man who fell from a cruise ship has been unsuccessful.

According to the company, Norwegian Cruise Line was made aware that a passenger had fallen overboard around 3 p.m. Thursday while the cruise ship was traveling from Ocho Rios, Jamaica, to Nassau. A search followed.

“Authorities were immediately notified and a search and rescue operation was initiated under the direction and supervision of the Bahamas Rescue Coordination Center,” a Norwegian Cruise Line spokesperson said The Independent in a statement.

“After an extensive search, which unfortunately was unsuccessful, the authorities released the ship to continue its journey,” the spokesman continued.

It’s not immediately clear how the man fell from the ship.

Records indicate he was vacationing on the Norwegian Epic on a seven-day “Christmas-themed” cruise. After stops in Cozumel, Grand Cayman Island, Ocho Rios and the Bahamas, the voyage ends on December 28th in Port Canaveral, Florida, according to Cruise Mapper.

The man was not identified but was traveling with a large group, including family members, who are “being cared for and supported in this very challenging situation,” the spokesman said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones during this difficult time.”

Some passengers on board captured the rescue operations and posted videos on social media. One user showed a flare on the water nearby and said the ship was circling the area to try to find the passenger who fell overboard.

Holland America Line’s Zuiderdam, another cruise ship, was nearby at the time of the incident and was assisting in the search, they said CruiseHive.
